RKO large ram’s head stand from Citizen Kane, Star Trek and other productions
This large bronze and ebonized wood antique stand was in numerous productions over the years and can be seen in many classics of both the large and small screen. Its earliest use is in the Paris nightclub at the beginning of The Gay Divorcee, where Astaire dances for his supper. It was then modified by removing the upper and lower ebonized portions for The Last Days of Pompeii the following year. Astaire and Rogers dance between the pair in a similar cafe, in the same city, in The Story of Vernon and Irene Castle in 1939. It also appears on the stage, painted white, in Citizen Kane during Susan’s opera debut. A pair of them flank Kay Kyser’s stage in the musical mystery romp You’ll Find Out!, the only teaming of Karloff, Lorre and Lugosi. It is in the hotel lobby with Ava Gardner in My Forbidden Past, where she goes to see the lawyer. That same year it appears in the Season 1 episode of The Adventures of Superman entitled “Mystery in Wax” in the Museum display. It is in the Star Trek episodes “Bread and Circuses”, “Plato’s Stepchildren” and “Requiem for Methuselah”. An important film artifact. Measures 48 in. tall. |

Pair of RKO pedestals from Star Trek, Citizen Kane and other productions
These may well be the most photographed set pieces in film history. Inventoried into the RKO Property Department by Tom Little on April 25, 1935, one of them had already appeared in the hotel lobby in Flying Down to Rio. As a pair they are in the bridal suite in Top Hat on either side of the bedroom door. One, painted white is in Ginger Rogers’ apartment in Shall We Dance. The pair can be seen in the mansion in Fifth Avenue Girl, also with Ginger. They flank the fireplace in the Music room and are in various scenes at “Xanadu” in Citizen Kane. They also appear in The Saint in New York, The Falcon in San Francisco, The Ex-Mrs. Bradford, Bedlam, Born to Kill, Fallen Sparrow, and for the first time in color, in The French Line and Slightly Scarlett. Desilu used them in Mission: Impossible and again, one in each room, in the Star Trek episode “Requiem for Methuselah”. After the sale to Paramount, they are seen in multiple episodes of Bonanza during Season 11 in the Palace Hotel suite. Each piece has many RKO warehouse markings as well as a modern Paramount sticker bar code inventory label. Each exhibit minor cracks and/or chipping, as is common with extensive production use and age. |
