WILLIAM WARE THEISS ORIGINAL CONCEPTUAL DRAWINGS OF STAR TREK BRIDGE TUNICS AND STARFLEET EMBLEMS
This historically significant archive features early sketches, notes, and renderings in the hand of original Star Trek costume designer William Ware Theiss relating to the bridge tunic and its corresponding emblems and rank trim. Thought to be the earliest known drawings on what would become television’s most recognizable and celebrated costumes, this lot includes an oversized 18 in. x 24 in. sketch pad page featuring a large, bold sketch of the USS Enterprise bridge tunic and a tentatively drawn in bridge emblem. A second large sketch pad page features handwritten notes and loose sketches of emblems, metals, rank trim, and other ornamentation. Theiss’ handwritten notes such as, “Medals logical progression” document the great thought behind creating the enduring Star Trek costumes. A third smaller sketch thought to be the earliest of the three and perhaps the first of its kind contains crude conceptual doodles and the names of what would forever live on as the command, engineering and science emblems. This lot also includes a vintage Desilu envelope containing a cutting pattern and crudely cut bridge uniform emblems, a swatch of gold metallic rigid material with a bridge uniform rank dash still embedded within, as well as three finished and cut out rank dashes. Acquired directly from the estate of William Ware Theiss. |

ARCHIVE OF WORKROOM MATERIALS FROM STAR TREK DESIGNER WILLIAM THEISS
(NBC-TV, 1966-69) Archive of materials from the workroom of visionary Star Trek costume designer, William Ware Theiss, including a Strathmore sketch pad containing five sketches of costumes (one dated 11-21-68) and pages of written notes outlining costs of materials, trim, and notions, a loose black pen drawing of a female costume drawn (of actor Teri Garr as Roberta Lincoln) on the back of a script cover page for Star Trek episode “Assignment Earth” dated December 20, 1967, and a second loose color sketch of a green female ensemble. Also, a collection of ten paper napkins and paper towels featuring pen & ink conceptual drawings and doodles of costumes in the hand of Mr. Theiss. There was little time for the design and build of what could be numerous costumes on “Star Trek” and other weekly television shows, and when inspiration struck, Mr. Theiss was known to draw anywhere and on anything! Also in this lot, two vintage photos of models in futuristic Theiss dresses, four pieces of Star Trek /Desilu note paper and one piece of letterhead (printed “from the log of the Starship Enterprise”), four receipts from 1967 showing costumes being rented for the show (one with an original Bill Theiss signature), a fan letter from a young fan asking questions about uniform emblems, a metallic silver tubular Stim prop and corresponding brown rustic casing with faux horse hair and colorful string & wire detailing from the Gene Roddenberry pilot, Genesis Two, and Star Trek birthday party drinking cups and a paper tablecloth mint in package from the 1970’s. Acquired directly from the estate of William Ware Theiss. |

(NBC-TV, 1966-69) “Sleep Suit” worn on the “Botany Bay” spaceship, constructed of a gold mesh fabric.
