SALE: Hollywoold Auction 26 ESTIMATE: $4000 - $6000
PRICE: unknown
Pair of RKO pedestals from Star Trek, Citizen Kane and other productions
These may well be the most photographed set pieces in film history. Inventoried into the RKO Property Department by Tom Little on April 25, 1935, one of them had already appeared in the hotel lobby in Flying Down to Rio. As a pair they are in the bridal suite in Top Hat on either side of the bedroom door. One, painted white is in Ginger Rogers’ apartment in Shall We Dance. The pair can be seen in the mansion in Fifth Avenue Girl, also with Ginger. They flank the fireplace in the Music room and are in various scenes at “Xanadu” in Citizen Kane. They also appear in The Saint in New York, The Falcon in San Francisco, The Ex-Mrs. Bradford, Bedlam, Born to Kill, Fallen Sparrow, and for the first time in color, in The French Line and Slightly Scarlett. Desilu used them in Mission: Impossible and again, one in each room, in the Star Trek episode “Requiem for Methuselah”. After the sale to Paramount, they are seen in multiple episodes of Bonanza during Season 11 in the Palace Hotel suite. Each piece has many RKO warehouse markings as well as a modern Paramount sticker bar code inventory label. Each exhibit minor cracks and/or chipping, as is common with extensive production use and age.
